Photographic activities

We plan each session around the subject, background and light, adapting to wildlife activity and conditions. The aim is a varied collection of images: portraits, birds in flight, behaviour, habitats, landscapes and the smaller details that tell the story of the Delta.

Daily rhythm in the Delta
Each day follows the quiet rhythm of the Danube Delta, adapted to light and wildlife activity.

  • Morning session: 04:30–10:30 (best light and bird movement)
  • Afternoon session: 15:30–20:00 (golden light and calm water)

What you’ll photograph in the Danube Delta – Europe’s great wetland
Main subjects

  • Dalmatian & White Pelicans
  • Squacco, Night, Purple & Grey Herons, Little Bitterns
  • Egrets, Pygmy Cormorants, Glossy Ibises, Spoonbills
  • Kingfishers, terns, waders
  • White-tailed Eagles & other raptors
  • European Rollers and Bee-eaters on colourful perches

Mammals such as Otters, Golden Jackals, and Raccoon Dogs occasionally appear.

Photo approach
Morning and evening sessions on a custom low-profile photo boat for water-level perspectives
Opportunities for flight, fishing behaviour, interactions, reflections, and silhouettes at sunrise/sunset
Optional environmental storytelling: villages, fishermen, canals, reeds, and calm-water reflections
Ethical mobile hide sessions where appropriate (always placed responsibly, avoiding nesting disturbance and stress)

We move quietly, engine off whenever possible — keeping the Delta peaceful and the bird photography ethical. We may use mobile “doghouse” blinds or small hides where appropriate, always ethically and with the birds’ comfort as the first priority.
The goal is to build a varied portfolio: portraits, flight shots, birds in habitat, mammals, landscapes, and details that tell the story of this unique corner of Europe — a true Danube Delta wildlife photography experience.

Optional drone photography

During this tour, we visit several areas that look incredible from above: labyrinths of channels, patchwork lakes, reedbeds, dunes, and dry hills. These landscapes of the Danube Delta offer exceptional opportunities for drone photography, especially during sunrise and sunset.

Drone photography is possible only where current rules, permissions and conditions allow it. Check with us before travelling and avoid flying near sensitive wildlife or restricted airspace.

If you plan to bring a drone, contact us before the trip so we can discuss restrictions and whether any suitable opportunities are available.

Check the applicable operator-registration, pilot-competency and local permission requirements before flying. Requirements depend on the drone, the operation and the location.

Accommodation

  • Comfortable 3-4 ★ hotels/guesthouses, all rooms en suite
  • Carefully selected partners with good food, friendly hosts and locations ideal for wildlife photography and birdwatching

Room policy

To guarantee privacy and comfort, we do not arrange room shares between separate bookings. Solo travellers are required to book a single room (single supplement applies).

The Lodges

We stay in carefully selected guesthouses that match the spirit of the expedition: authentic, comfortable, and close to the action. Expect clean en‑suite rooms, warm hospitality, and hearty local meals. Single rooms are available on request (subject to availability) with a supplement.

Meals

  • Breakfast and dinner included in the price (locally sourced soups, fish, meat, vegetables and traditional dishes)
  • We can cater for most dietary requirements if informed in advance
  • Optional lunch: €15-25 (paid on the spot in cash – RON or EUR)

    Detailed plan

    Discover how each day unfolds.

Day 1 – Arrival in Tulcea and transfer to the Danube Delta

Meet the group at Tulcea Harbour – “Ivan Patzaichin” Promenade at 3:00 PM.

We start by boat along rivers and channels to our base near Maliuc/Mila 23 — a traditional water-only village in the heart of the wetlands — and we enjoy our first wildlife photo session.

On the way, you already get a first taste of the Delta: fishermen, reedbeds, herons, and perhaps your first pelicans gliding low over the water.

Check-in, dinner, tour briefing, and an overview of the days ahead.

  • Days 2–4 – Danube Delta: 3 full days of birds & wildlife photography

Three full days (plus an extra morning) dedicated almost entirely to bird and wildlife photography in one of Europe’s richest wetlands — the Danube Delta, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for exceptional biodiversity.

    Each day:

    • Pre-sunrise departure to be in position when the first light hits the water
    • Slow, ethical navigation through channels, lakes, and reedbeds, reading signs of activity and adapting the route in real time
    • Return late morning for breakfast and rest.
    • Afternoon/evening session starting about 4 hours before sunset, exploring new areas or revisiting productive spots.

    Targets include:

    • Pelicans (White & Dalmatian)
    • Egrets, herons, ibises, spoonbills
    • Kingfishers, terns, gulls, waders
    • White-tailed Eagles and other raptors
    • Otters, wild boars, roe deer, muskrats, raccoon dogs (with luck)

After dinner, optional image review and discussion — settings, composition, fieldcraft — in a relaxed atmosphere perfect for improving your wildlife photography skills.

  • Day 5 – Last Delta session and transfer to Tulcea

We enjoy a last morning photo session in the Danube Delta, often in beautiful soft light on the way back to Tulcea. Keep your camera ready — some of the best encounters happen when you least expect them.

Around midday, we arrive in Tulcea, where our tour ends.

You leave with memory cards full of images — and, more importantly, with a deeper connection to the Danube Delta and its wild inhabitants.

      Frequently asked questions

      Preparation and equipment

      Recommended photo equipment

      • Wide-angle (14–24mm / 16–35mm): landscapes and habitat scenes
      • Medium zoom (24–70mm / 24–105mm): storytelling shots
      • Telephoto lens (for example, a 100–400mm zoom or a 500mm prime): close-ups and birds in flight

A beanbag or tripod is recommended for the boat, along with weather protection for your gear.

This mix of lenses allows you to capture everything — from grand landscapes to the delicate details of Romania’s wild birds.

      What to bring

      • Torch or headlamp
      • Binoculars (for scanning and enjoying bird behaviour between shots)
      • Tripod/monopod (useful for wildlife and bird photography sessions)
      • Insect repellent
      • Waterproof and/or non-slip sandals or shoes
      • Windproof jacket for fast boat rides in the Danube Delta
      • Sun block, hat, and sunglasses (essential for long hours outdoors in the Delta)

Drone use is permitted only with authorisation and in accordance with ethical photography guidelines within the protected areas of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.

Where do we meet, and where does the tour end?

The tour starts and ends at Tulcea Harbour – “Ivan Patzaichin” Promenade.

Please meet the group there at 3:00 PM on Day 1. The tour ends at around 1:00 PM on Day 5.

    • Is this tour suitable only for experienced photographers?

Not at all. The tour is designed for both experienced photographers and enthusiastic beginners who want to improve in the field. Guidance is available throughout the trip, and the small group format makes it easy to adapt advice to each participant’s level.

    • Do I need professional camera gear to enjoy the tour?

No. A professional setup can help in certain situations, especially for birds in flight, but it is not essential to enjoy the experience. A mirrorless or DSLR camera with a telephoto lens is ideal, while guests who are mainly interested in birdwatching can also participate with binoculars and a lighter camera.

    • How physically demanding is the tour?

The tour is rated easy. Most of the time is spent on the boat, with only short walks and simple transfers on land. Early mornings are part of the experience, but overall the tour is comfortable and suitable for most guests with a normal level of mobility.

    • How much time do we spend on the boat each day?

Most days include two main field sessions: an early-morning session and an afternoon/evening session. Between sessions, there is time for breakfast, rest, reviewing images, or simply enjoying the quiet rhythm of the Delta. The program remains flexible and adapts to light and wildlife activity.

    • What happens if the weather is not good or bird activity is slow?

Weather and wildlife are always part of real nature travel, so no exact sightings can ever be guaranteed. However, the itinerary is flexible, and routes are adapted in real time based on wind, light, water conditions, and bird behaviour to maximize opportunities while keeping the experience ethical and enjoyable.

    • What clothing should I pack?

May to early July is typically warm to hot (often 27–33°C during the day). Bring layers for cool pre-dawn starts, plus sun protection for Dobrogea and a windproof jacket for fast boat rides in the Delta. Insect repellent is recommended.

    • Can I rent equipment during the tour?

Yes. We have a small selection of Canon-compatible gear available for rent during the tour, subject to availability. Please request it in advance so we can reserve it.

    • Can I rent camera gear for this tour?

Yes. In addition to our in-house Canon gear, we can often arrange rentals through our partners (Canon Romania, Nikon Romania, Sony Romania). Availability depends on your requested model and dates, so please ask when you book.
