Amphibians

Common Frog

Rana temporaria

Identification

A robust frog with a dark patch behind the eye and highly variable body colour. A reddish individual is not automatically a different species.

When to look

Activity and breeding depend on temperature, moisture and altitude. The calendar at a mountain pool can differ from that of a lowland pond.

Where to look

Damp woodland, grassland and mountain habitats are important in Romania, with suitable freshwater breeding sites nearby.

Behaviour and ecology

Food and nutrition

Adults feed on varied small invertebrates. Terrestrial habitat remains important after the brief concentration at breeding water.

Breeding and life cycle

Eggs are deposited as jelly-covered clumps in water. Tadpoles develop there before metamorphosis and movement onto land.

A closer look

A frog's life links a pond with the surrounding landscape. Protecting only the water while losing nearby damp cover leaves the cycle incomplete.

Observation and photography

Watch without entering pools, collecting spawn or moving frogs between sites. Preserve quiet moist refuges and do not pose animals on exposed rocks.

Sources and further reading

Observe without handling or moving animals, collecting eggs or disturbing shelters. Avoid trampling pond margins. Do not lift cover objects for photographs. Do not treat a short guide as a safe snake-identification or handling manual.
