Identification
A small bird with a dark eye-mask, pale head and warm brown back. It is associated with waterside trees and reeds rather than only with typical woodland tits.
When to look
Northern populations migrate, while some southern birds are resident. Local seasonal status in Romania requires site-specific observations rather than a universal rule.
Where to look
River and lake margins combining reeds, reedmace, willows and poplars provide feeding material and potential nesting supports.
Behaviour and ecology
Food and nutrition
Small invertebrates, particularly insect larvae, are important. Seeds are also taken.
Breeding and life cycle
It builds a hanging, enclosed pouch from plant fibres and soft down, with a tube-like entrance near the top.
A closer look
The intricate suspended nest is one of its most remarkable features, but a visible old nest does not prove that birds are currently breeding there.
Global conservation assessment
LC · Least Concern
Global category recorded from the linked assessment; it does not describe local abundance. Least Concern does not mean absence of threats.
View the source assessment ↗Observation and photography
Observe from a path or existing boat route. Never pull down a nest, touch its supports or wait close to an occupied entrance.
Sources and further reading
Keep a distance that allows birds to feed and rest normally. Do not enter colonies, approach nests, flush roosts or use playback for photographs. Never publish precise nest locations of sensitive species. Follow reserve rules and your guide's advice.
